In March of 2021, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced that African elephants were now endangered and critically endangered species. The latest assessments highlighted a broad scale decline in elephants across the continent. African forest elephants dropped by more than 86 percent over a period of 31 years, while the population of African savanna elephants decreased by 60 percent over the last 50 years.
The Cheetah Conservation Fund Kenya reports a declining rate of the East African cheetah’s, which has reduced by over 25 percent in the past two decades. Kenya Wildlife Service in partnership with the East African Wildlife Society launched a nationwide cheetah census and reported a continuous decline in cheetah numbers. The census reported this may be caused by increased population density and decline of natural prey.
